Squamous cell carcinomas encountered in the head and neck region and differences in etiology and prognosis are increasingly recognized based on the subsite of tumor origin. Dr. Williams will provide a review of anatomy to determine the correct site of origin for staging and related histologic factors. She will also address changes in the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, Eighth Edition that include three separate chapters related to this site: nasopharynx, oropharynx (non-HPV associated), and hypopharynx.
- Review head and neck anatomy critical to ensure accurate staging.
- Compare the seventh edition to the eighth edition to understand how lymph node extranodal extension and tumor HPV status contribute to the biology of head and neck cancers.
- Learn the new registry collection variables for the eighth edition for head and neck cancers.
